Handleable notational variations are exemplified, although not exhaustively, in this sample.
If the first entry, before sorting, begins with a serial number of either of the forms "[1]", "(2)", "3)" and "4.", all entries will be numbered using the same format. Try this sample.
4 Registering Exceptional Names
If an organizational name such as "United Nations" is treated as a personal name, "United" is construed as the given name and "Nations" the family name, which results in an incorrect sort. In such cases, follow this link and register the name with a sort value "united nations", which is to be compared with, for instance, the sort value "doe john" for "John Doe". You can also register "The United Nations" as an exceptional name with a sort value "united nations", thus ignoring the definite article in sorting.
Registered names will be learned in principle, and need not be registered repeatedly.
4 Notes and Tips
The results of sorting may possibly be imperfect. Check and modify the sorted bibliography before it is published.
All but one of completely identical entries will be discarded.
You can maintain italics when sorting a bibliography in a Word document. See here for an instruction.
To avoid overloading the system, the size of a bibliography is limited up to 100 entries. If you need to sort a larger bibliography, save it as a text file in the format which can be sorted here, and email it to me. Tens of thousands of entries can be sorted locally.
